Definitely not! I knew I wanted to work with disabled people for well over a decade, which is why I became an occupational therapist, with the board certification and student loans to prove it! Towards the end of my graduate school, I found out I have ADHD. Going through life without a diagnosis, accommodations, chronic burnout, job hopping, horrible relationships, nonexistent boundaries, and being misunderstood and overlooked is why I'm so passionate about helping other ADHD women who are in similar shoes.
No, a solid mental health therapist can be amazing, but occupational therapy is completely different skillset. With an occupational therapist, your mental health improves as your function improves. My coaching is very holistic and looks at every aspect of your life including your career, relationships, home-life, leisure, and parenting, getting to the root causes. Many of my clients come to me after they didn't get what they needed out of mental health therapy.
After ~6 months, my clients achieve what they hired me for, with the skills to sustain everything we worked through together. It's not a long term thing like talk therapy often is.
Yes!!! It's a misconception that being self-aware means that you know how to fix the problems you're facing. My clients are extremely self-aware and very intelligent.
Nope! This is why I left the traditional medical system and became an ADHD Coach. You get the benefit of working with someone that has an occupational therapy background without the hassle of dealing with the medical system. I can also work with anyone from anywhere!
No, insurance likes to tell healthcare workers when a client needs care and when they don't. (Don't get me started on that soap box!) The level of care that goes into my coaching would be one wild co-pay. Not accepting insurance is why I'm able to give unlimited support between sessions, work with anyone from anywhere, and not require a formal diagnosis.
